Section 1: DI

Does your opponent seem to live FOREVER, while you seem to die as soon as you get to high percents? Do you often wonder how they manage this impossible feat? This is often how new players feel whenever they first encounter someone who knows how to DI.
DI stands for Directional Influence, and is basically the movement applied to your character by moving the control stick. Whenever you jump and move around in the air, that my friend is DI.
"Wait, what? That's not DI! If that's DI then why don't I live that long?"
Oh, but it is DI. You just don't know how to apply it yet. Let me lay it out nice and simple like for you. When you get hit, you die by flying off into one of the blast zones, correct? Well, then you would want to be hit towards the furthest blast zone, right? Right. Unfortunately, our opponents aren't so obliging of us, and will try to hit is toward the closest blast zone. This is where DI comes in. With DI, you want to direct yourself to the furthest possible blast zone from where you're hit--i.e. the corners.
If you're hit to the right (or left), you want to DI up toward the corner.

Simple enough, right?
Go try it out!
A common mistake people make when trying to DI is to DI in the direction opposite of the one you're traveling in. This DOES NOT work. You cannot reverse your momentum, only direct it.
Let's review this section. What have we learned?
Doin' it right:
DI towards the corner
Doin' it wrong:
DI away from the blast zone

Section 2: SDI

Alrighty, now that you have DI down (what's that, you DON'T have DI down? Go back and learn it!), you might just be ready for the more advanced SDI.
SDI stands for Smash Directional Influence, and is performed with the c-stick, or smash stick. (Please note that this won't work if you've modified your controls to b-stick.) The basic explanation of it is this: on the frame when you are taking a hit, you can use SDI to basically warp your character a direction you press with the cstick. Simple enough, right? Right. The catch is, you have to be exceptionally fast about it, and you have to be coordinated enough to do it without messing up your DI (some people seem to be incapable of using the cstick and control stick at the same time, or get so distracted by trying to SDI that they forget to DI). SDI ALONE WILL NOT SAVE YOU 99% OF THE TIME. SDI is merely an addition to DI, but even then it's not all that useful. It is useful for two things though.
Use 1: Directing yourself towards the stage out of a meteor smash. When you get meteored, you can use SDI to help yourself DI towards and hopefully tech the stage to save yourself. Occurrences of this type are few and far between.
Use 2: Probably the most common and most useful use of SDI, getting out of multi-hit attacks. Don't you hate getting stuck in that laser on Halberd? Did you know it's possible to avoid taking knockback from it, even if you are hit? All you have to do is hold your control stick in one direction (the direction that takes you out of it) and hammer your cstick in that same direction. If you do it fast enough, you'll escape the laser with minimal damage and avoid that nasty and potentially lethal knockback. Another move most people don't know how to get out of is Pikachu's dsmash. By simply holding up on the control stick and tapping up on the cstick very quickly, you can escape while taking only 7% and avoiding the upwards knockback.

When done right, you'll just be thrown out to one side or the other at low trajectory. Please be careful around ledges and know that you may get semispiked by this.

If your fingers are too slow... Well, you'll just get hit as normal, and probably DI the final hit straight upwards to a likely death.

That pretty much does it for SDI. There's nothing more I can really tell you about it, except that it is extremely difficult to do on a normal move.

Here is a video showing off SDI in slow motion.

This video shows off using aerial SDI (SDI in the air).

Provided videos are epic.

I've known about SDI, but I'm no good at it.

Not worth messing up the control stick for Smash DI.
